Michael Merker (1978), Vice director & Head of Human Resources

Michael Merker was born in the African state of Burundi and has lived in the Engadin since 1989. After completing his matura studies at the Academia Engiadina, he graduated from the Belvoirpark School of Hotel Management in Zurich. He has gained experience at the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains in St. Moritz and at the Waldhaus am See, St. Moritz. Michael Merker has been engaged at Hotel Saratz since November 2006, initially as assistant to the personnel manager and now with full responsibility for human resources.

Thorsten Stegemann (1980),

Born and raised in Berlin, Thorsten Stegemann successfully completed his training as a chef in the International Club Berlin e.V.
He gained more experience in the 5-star Hotels Hilton in Berlin and Vienna. In 2008, Thorsten Stegemann came to St. Moritz to work first as sous chef, later as executive sous chef in the Hotel Laudinella.
We welcome Mr. Stegemann at the hotel Saratz team and wish him a good start and good luck.

Leopold Urban (1983), Chef de Réception

Leopold Urban grew up in Bavaria. His career in the hotel industry started in 2002 in the 4-star-superior hotel Jungbrunn in Tyrol (AT), where he completed his training in Hotel Management and as a cook. in 2007, he returned to Bavaria to the 5-star-superior hotel Schloss Elmau. Since 2008, Leopold Urban is part of Hotel Saratz Team, first as second Chef de Réception and since December 2011 as Chef de Réception.

Cathleen Grossmann (1981), Banquet-manager

Cathleen Grossmann, born and raised in Dresden, completed her training as a restaurant manager in Radebeul. Due to her interest in foreign countries and the desire for professional development, she worked in South Africa, Ireland and Italy. In September 2008 she came to the Hotel Saratz, where she gained valuable experiences as Chef de Service and Food and Beverage Assistant. Since May 2011, Ms Grossmann is the contact person for your events and meetings.

Heidi von Heissen (1987), Sales & Marketing

Heidi von Heissen was born and raised in Baden-Württemberg. After graduating high school, she completed the Bachelor in Tourism Management at University of applied sciences Munich. The first time, Heidi von Heissen came to Hotel Saratz was in 2010, when she did an internship in the area of food & beverage. Since November 2012, she is a part of the Saratz team and is responsible for sales and marketing.

René Gross (1983), Chef de Service Art Nouveau Restaurant

René Gross grew up in Potsdam near Berlin. After completing his training in hotel management in the Albergo Hotel Berlin in 2009, he moved to Seefeld/Austria. In the 5-Star Hotel Klosterbräu he started as chef de rang, later he became maître d'hôtel.
Since May 2011 he is part of the Hotel Saratz team and welcomes you as chef de service in the Art Nouveau Restaurant.

Daniel Kern (1963), Chef de Service Pitschna Scena


Daniel Kern was born in Bern. He completed his training as a chef in Basel. After completing his management training at the Belvoirpark Hotel Management school in Zürich, he worked in well-known hotels like Hotel Quellenhof in Bad Ragaz and the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa. Since 2001, he lives in the Upper Engadine and worked as restaurant manager for the Diavolezza mountain restaurants.
Most recently he managed the Hotel Allegra in Pontresina.
Since June 2013 now he welcomes you in the Pitschna Scena!
