Careful handling of resources

In July 2013, Hotel Saratz has been honoured with the "Green Living" award by the Swiss Hotel Association.

The careful use of resources is paramount at Hotel Saratz. Goals to reduce the consumption were set by measuring the consumption of resources such as electricity, water or fuel oil. Our measurements in detail:

Measured variable Definition Actual value
17/18
Target value 18/19 Deviation
Power consumption KWh/LN 23.58 24.00 -0.42
Fuel consumption (cars) Lt/LN 0.11 0.10 -0.01
Fuel oil consumption Lt/LN 0.63 1.00 +0.37
Paper consumption Sheets/LN 5.25 5.00 -0.25
Water consumption m3/LN 0.38 0.40 +0.02
Industrial waste Kg/LN 2.00 1.60 -0.40
Kitchen waste Kg/LN 0.70 0.50 -0.20

Hazardous waste Kg/LN 0.01 0.03 +0.02

Our environmental objectives

To achieve these goals, processes and patterns have to be changed. Our efforts are formulated as follows:

1. Power Consumption

The number of devices that are powered by electricity increases steadily. New technologies enable a lower consumption of electricity therefore we commit to keep up with the latest technologies available. We have set the goal to reduce power consumption as follows:

  • We provide a daily tip to sensitize our guests on the environmental issues.
  • We will replace the remaining halogen lights with LED lights in guest rooms and public areas.
  • We will replace the remaining light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs.
  • We will replace the halogen lights in the staff rooms with LED lights.

5. Water consumption

Water consumption of Hotel Saratz has been reduced since 2009 from 0.73 m3 per LN to 0.37 m3 in 2018. Now it is important to keep up this trend.
Our efforts for the fiscal year 2018/19:

  • We provide a daily tip to sensitise our guests on the environmental issues.
  • Employees are thoroughly trained to raise awareness for water usage
  • The kitchen staff reduces the consumption of water for product cooling or when defrosting.
  • A pump may be purchased.

2. Fuel for cars

The consumption of fuel is kept within limit, however, a certain usage can still be avoided.

Our efforts to achieve a reduction of 1% as follows:

  • We optimize transports for staff and hotel guests
  • We commit to also use bicycles for running errands in the village

6. Industrial waste

A lot of waste can be eliminated: by sorting, efficiently using and avoiding unnecessary packaging. Our goals are:

  • We provide a daily tip to rise awareness of our guests on the environmental issues and do not use packaging whenever possible
  • Waste separation is trained 6 times per year, random checks are held regularly
  • The maids sort the garbage within reasonable efforts

3. Fuel oil

The consumption of fuel oil has declined steadily in recent years. It can be reduced even more by small adjustments.

Here are our goals for the fiscal year 2018/19:

  • We provide a daily tip to rise the awareness of our guests on the environmental issues.
  • During summer, we turn off the heating system every day from 11am to 4pm
  • Employees are trained on "proper airing"

7. Kitchen waste

The quantity of kitchen waste is high. Improvements can be made with a consistent separation. The goals are:

  • Food will be bought already prepared or trimmed whenever possible, without lowering the quality of the food
  • If possible vegetables and fruits are purchased daily, so products are fresh with less waste as a result.
  • Products are cooked in exact quantities based on experience, thus eliminating unnecessary disposal
  • Bread is donated to the local farmers to feed the horses. Nevertheless, we aim to purchase exactly what is needed to further reduce the waste.

4. Paper consumption

Paper consumption has been greatly reduced in recent years, however, we are still trying to save even more. Our goals for the fiscal year 2018/19:

  • We print reservations two-sided and select a multiple pages layout (4 pages per sheet)
  • Further merging of lists in the Spirit System, for all departments
  • If possible, we print multiple pages per sheet (4 pages per sheet)
  • We increase the use of electronic media to further reduce paper consumption (PC, laptop, tablet, etc.)

8. Cardboard

Cardboard is separated from other waste and disposed free of charge. Nevertheless, a very large amount of cardboard accumulates each year. For the sake of the environment, we want to improve in this regard as well. Our action steps to reduce the cardboard waste:

  • We prefer reusable containers for the transport of goods.
  • We buy bundled in original packaging.
  • We try to buy locally to avoid unnecessary packaging.
  • We return the packaging to the supplier, whenever possible

9. Hazardous waste

We are moving more and more towards zero hazardous waste. The emphasis is placed on sustainability, renovation and reuse of furniture and the like.

  • Old furniture is renovated or restored, wherever possible.
  • Suppliers recycle any replaced material.
  • We try to sell before we discard any items

For The Sake Of The Environment And NatureClean Energy

The interior of planet earth holds enough energy to ensure the supply on its surface – and that in a clean and environmentally friendly fashion. Reason enough for Hotel Saratz to build its own geothermal energy production facility.

Brief explanation of the facility:

  • A borehole with a depth of 1347 m, the first in Switzerland, was sunk in the hotel garden for the production of renewable energy.
  • Water circulating at this depth is warmed to 40°C quite naturally by the heat of the earth.
  • This warm water is introduced into the circulation system by means of a heat pump. During this process, the available heat is extracted and then the water is getting pumped back into the circulation system.
  • Hotel Saratz uses the energy gained to heat the hotel’s indoor pool and wellness zone as well as part of the hotel complex. Oil-fired heating is also available to cover times of peak load.
  • The result: by this means, Hotel Saratz saves about 100,000 litres of heating oil per year, equivalent to a CO2 emission of 310 tonnes per year. Around 80% of the heating requirement can be met by using geothermal energy. We are proud to have such a positive impact.

Hotel Saratz is thus making a contribution to maintaining the quality of air and life in the Engadine for future generations. The valley has an affinity with, and a long tradition, in the energy sector: it is the “dry chamber” (322 annual days of sun) and at the same time one of the water-wealthiest valleys in the Alps.
